That Was Yoga? … This Is Meditation?

Whether you are part of a yoga community and have practiced for years, or you’ve never even signed up for a class, yoga and meditation are probably already part of your life.

They just might not be called that.

Most people think yoga and meditation only happen in a studio, on a mat, in quiet rooms with candles and soft music. But in reality, these moments show up in everyday life more often than we realize.

You may have already been practicing yoga and meditation long before you ever heard those words.

Let me explain.

The Car Concert Meditation

Have you ever been driving, your favorite song comes on, and suddenly the volume knob goes all the way up?

You start singing along. Maybe a little “car dance” happens. Shoulders moving. Steering wheel drumming.

In that moment, you’re completely in it.

What you may not realize is that you’ve just stepped into a form of meditation.

For those few minutes, your mind isn’t running through your to-do list. You’re not replaying conversations from earlier in the day. You’re not stressing about tomorrow.

Your mind is focused on the music, the feeling it brings, and the moment you’re in.

Your brain gets a break.

When the song ends, you feel lighter. Your mood shifts. Your body relaxes.

That’s because your brain released endorphins and stress-fighting hormones while you were fully engaged in something that brought you joy.

And sometimes, you even keep singing the song for a little while longer as you drive.

That little daze you drift into?

Yep.

That’s meditation.

The Shower Reset

Have you ever stepped into a hot shower, you close your eyes and just stand there for a moment while the water hits your shoulders.

You’re not thinking about work.
You’re not running through tomorrow’s plans.

You’re simply noticing how the water feels and the sound it makes as it falls around you.

Then without even thinking about it, a slow deep breath happens.

Maybe another one.

Now you’re not just in a moment of stillness — you’ve accidentally added breathwork into the mix.

That simple pause where you let the water run and your shoulders drop?

That’s meditation too.

The “I Need to Stretch” Moment

Let’s talk about something almost everyone does during the day.

You’ve been sitting for a while. Your back feels tight.

So you stand up.

You reach your arms toward the ceiling and stretch. Maybe you place your hands on your hips and lean forward for a second. Maybe you bend a little to the side to loosen up.

Without realizing it, you’re doing movements that exist inside yoga.

If we put yoga names to them, they might look something like:

Parsva Bhanga – Palm Tree Pose
Ardha Uttanasana – Forward Bend
Eka Hasta Parsva Bhanga – Standing Side Bend

But here’s the thing.

You don’t need to know the Sanskrit names.

And honestly, yoga poses often have multiple names anyway because there are multiple types and variations.

The point isn’t memorizing pose names.

The point is that your body naturally wants to move and release tension.

And when you listen to that instinct, you’re already practicing a form of yoga.

Yoga and Meditation Aren’t Exclusive Clubs

Somewhere along the way, yoga and meditation picked up the reputation of being something only experienced practitioners do.

But the truth is much simpler.

Yoga is movement that reconnects you to your body.

Meditation is the moment when your mind gets a pause.

Both of those things happen naturally in everyday life.

In the car.

In the shower.

In the middle of a workday stretch.

These moments count.

They’re small resets that your nervous system uses to regulate stress and bring you back to center.

A Small Reminder

You don’t have to be flexible to do yoga.

You don’t have to sit perfectly still to meditate.

Sometimes yoga is just a stretch your body asked for.

Sometimes meditation is a song you lose yourself in.

And sometimes the most powerful wellness practices are the ones you didn’t even realize you were already doing.

If you want to explore these moments a little more intentionally, I’m here.
